About J R D Tata Memorial Library

The JRD Tata Memorial Library (JRDTML) completed its centenary year of establishment in 2011. It was one of the first three departments to have been started in the Institute. Initially, the library was housed in the majestic main building. The library moved into the present premises in January 1965, built out of grants provided by University Grants Commission (UGC) in commemoration of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Institute in 1959. In 1995, the library was renamed as "J.R.D. Tata Memorial Library". The library is centrally located and its total area measures more than 5,000 sq. mts.

The primary objective of the library is to support the educational and research programs of the institute by providing physical and online access to information, consistent with the present and the anticipated educational and research functions of the institute. In accordance with the objectives of the institute, over the years, the library has been developing a comprehensive collection of peer-reviewed scholarly literature useful for the faculty and the research community of the institute. The secondary objective is to serve as a resource center for the scholars and scientific community of the country.

• Houses more than 6000 unique journal titles in Science and technology.
• Some of its rich collection includes prestigious journals from volume one issue one.
• Serves large pool of scientists and researchers across the country.
• Was a core member of INDEST-AICTE Consortium through which had access to over 7000+ e-journals and several databases.
• Now, a core member of e-Shod Sindhu a newly formed Consortia at the national level by MHRD through which access to more than 10,000 e-journals and several databases is provided.
• Recognized as the Regional Centre for Document Delivery Services by INFLIBNET of UGC.
• Recognized as Regional Resource Centre for Mathematics by National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM).
• Extends service to Corporate and Academic Institutional Members who are engaged in Research and Development.
• Subscribes to over 765+ journals spending over 15.00 crores of rupees (Annually).
• ePrints@IISc ( is one of the earliest and largest Institutional Repositories in the country.
• Provides access large number of back-files ( access to journal content from volume 1 issue 1) from major publishers which include : American Institute of Physics, Physical Reviews Online (PROLA) Institute of Physics Publishing Archive, JSTOR, American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, Elsevier Science, Wiley Interscience , Springer Verlag, SIAM, Nature Journal and Oxford University Press

Library Collection
With the excellent blend of print and electronic resources in the form of books, journals, databases, technical reports, and standards, the library collection is one of the finest in the country particularly in the field of science and technology. This rich and valuable collection built over the period of last ten decades has some of the rare reference materials and several important journals. The total print collection of the library exceeds more than 4 lakh volumes. This vast reservoir of knowledge, on a conservative estimate, is worth over Rs. 4,000 million.

Library Budget
The annual budget of the library is over Rs. 150 million of which subscription towards periodicals alone is about Rs. 130 million. The library currently receives over 765+ periodical titles. In addition, over 10,000 journals are accessible online, thanks to the e-Shodh Sindhu (eSS) - a MHRD consortium for higher education electronic resources,

Library Services
The library offers traditional services such as Reference Service, Referral Service, User Guidance Service, Cataloguing and Classification Service, Circulation Service including Inter Library Loan and Document Delivery Service, Weekly display of recent additions of periodicals and books, Bibliographic Service, Photocopying Service, and

Specialized services such as digital repository services for IISc publications & theses, Web based Online Public Access Catalog ( Web OPAC). IP authenticated access subscribed e-journals, e-books and databases. Information literary services such as Library orientations, Subscribed resource demo and training sessions, Trial access to e-journals and databases, Author Workshops etc Under the Corporate Membership Facility (CMF), reference alone facility has been extended to Corporate Organizations / Industries involved in R&D activities.

The library has been using LIBSYS, a Web-based Integrated Library Management software package with all the modules, for its housekeeping operations. The library Online Catalogue database has more than 1.5 lakh records of books (Bibliographic Information) and information about 200,000+ back volumes of periodicals. Using LIBSYS OPAC, users can search the Library Online Catalogue by Author, Title, Subject, and keywords. Also, the users can know the latest additions of periodicals and books and the status of a document (whether on shelf or on issue). OPAC is accessible on the Web and reservation of a book can be done Online.

Specialized Services : ePrints & ETD Digital Repositories

ePrints@IISc ( is one of the earliest and largest Institutional Repositories in the country. The ePrints@IISc was started by the erstwhile National Centre for Science Information. It is currently being managed by the J.R.D. Library. The repository collects, preserves, and disseminates in digital format the research output created by the IISc research community. The repository content can be accessed through the search and browse functionalities. As on date, the total number of publications in the repository is about 43500+.

etd@IISc ( is the digital repository of Theses and Dissertations of IISc, Bangalore, India. This repository has been developed to capture, disseminate and preserve the research theses of IISc. The repository content can be accessed through the search and browse functionalities. As on date, the total number of records in the repository is about 2500+.
